Necessary Words in Understanding English Grammar

Grammar terms

VERB (동사)= action or state

examples: 
action: go, see, run, study, wish
state: be, like, love, hate, live, believe, feel
 
Auxiliary Verb (조동사) = helping verb. It goes before another verb.
The auxiliary verbs are:

be (am, is, are, was, were) + ing words, or past participles (p.p)

examples:   am working.   She is talking.   Romeo and Juliet  was  written by Shakespeare.

havepast participle (p.p)   (PRESENT PERFECT)

example: I have lived in Ulsan for 3 years. 

do + infinitive     (QUESTIONS AND NEGATIVES)

examples:   Do you like beer?   Anita doesn't speak Korean.

will, would,shall, should, can,could, may, might, must + infinitive 

examples: She will go to Busan tomorrow.  Shall we danceCan you drink one bottle of soju?  May I go to the bathroom?  I must study for my English test.

 

 

NOUN = a person, place or thing
examples: man, Julia Roberts, school, Paris, park, cell phone
 
ADJECTIVE = describes a noun
examples: a happy student, a beautiful day, warm weather
 
ADVERB = describes a verb, adjective, another adverb or phrase; describes when, where, how, how much.
examples: walk quickly, very important test, almost all students
 
In Korean, the grammatical order of sentences is SOV.
(subject, object, verb)
For example: 사자 고기 먹는다.
..는 = SUBJECT  
..를 = OBJECT
..다 = VERB
 
In English, the order is SVO. (subject, verb, object)
For example: Lions eat meat.
lions = subject
eat = verb
meat = object
 
SUBJECT = tells who or what the sentence is about
OBJECT = who or what receives the verb
